International Markets

Whilst primarily based in the UK, Open Energi has advanced offerings available in several international markets. Our experience in providing flexibility in the UK and development of international products puts us in a strong position to assess flexibility and value in markets globally.

GB Market

Great Britain has one of the leading markets for flexibility globally, driven by massive growth in off-shore wind capacity and recent policy support for flexible assets. One of the earliest markets to open up to new participants, open procuremement of frequency response has driven growth in battery capacity and the introduction of new frequency products will solidify the role storage has to play. Additionally, traditional barriers to other markets, such as the Balancing Mechanism, have been removed, expanding the revenue streams available to flexibility.

Open Energi has been operating within the GB flexibility markets for over a decade and can provide a full suite of optimisation for assets within this market, using our leading state of charge management to provide frequency response services and maximise revenues in the Balancing Mechanism. A complete route-to-market solution can be provided alongside our partner Erova Energy, providing flexible PPAs for both flexible assets and renewable generation.

Australian Market

Electricity supply in Australia is managed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and has some of the most advanced features globally, with five-minutely pricing and dispatch, and five-minute settlement following shortly. This, along with high levels of renewable penetration, leads to sharp price signals and attractive trading revenues. AEMO managed grid frequency through its Frequency Control Ancillary Services market (FCAS). Participation from non-centralised generation is a relatively new phenomenon, and there are excellent revenue prospects, with strong growth being seen particularly in Regulation FCAS.

Open Energi has had an Australian office since 2018 and is in a position to offer a range of services, both for optimising grid scale and co-located storage, and in managing demand-side flexibility and behind-the-meter storage.

Key services:

  • FCAS
  • NEM (Wholesale market)
  • Demand charge management

Irish Market

The Single Electricy Market covers the electricity supply in Ireland and Northern Ireland, managed by the respective system operators Eirgrid and SONI. Ireland has seen significant growth in wind capacity and the DS3 programme has been introduced to facilitate further growth in volume of renewable generation through the procurement of a suite of system services, including frequency response. The first auction resulted in significant capacity of storage being developed and further procurement will continue to drive investment in flexibility.

Open Energi can offer optimisation services in both DS3 and the electricity markets, utilising our leading frequency response and trading algorithms. A complete route-to-market solution can be provided across Ireland and Northern Ireland alongside our partner Erova Energy, providing flexible PPAs for both flexible assets and renewable generation.

German Market

Germany has been one of the earliest adopters of renewable energy at scale, through its Energiewend policy enacted in 2010. This has seen huge investment into onshore wind in particular, which in turn has driven the need for flexibility. The introduction of storage has driven down the price and carbon intensity of providing frequency response, otherwise mostly provided by coal power stations. Germany has one of the most advanced intraday markets globally, with 15-minutely settlement providing sharp price signals and significant trading value.

Open Energi can deliver an automated trading and optimisation solution for storage assets in Germany, integrating the trading across day-ahead and intraday markets and delivering Primary Control Reserve to maximise returns.

  • Wholesale trading (day-ahead and intraday)

Global Expertise

The same principles of delivering electricity apply no matter where in the world you are, even if exact elements will differ between countries and regions. This means the same difficulties in balancing and managing frequency are faced by system operators across the globe.

With over 10 years of experience delivering these services within the UK, Open Energi is uniquely placed to advise on flexibility globally. The same transition seen in the UK over this timeframe – from centralised management of the grid to increasingly decentralised renewable energy and flexibility –  are now being seen across the world. In addition to the regions discussed above, Open Energi has already used this expertise to assess flexibility options in Spain, the USA, Japan, Italy and Canada.

Open Energi can advise on:

  • Identifying flexibility in demand-side applications;
  • Assessing value from available revenue streams and trading applications;
  • Suitability of co-locating storage alongside renewable generation and delivery of renewable firming
